Francesc Planes

Francesc Planes is one of the future promises of Spanish photography. The Valencian photographer, who is primarily dedicated to photographing artists, works with Teen Vogue and I+D Magazine, displaying a particular affinity for work related to the more human side, the one that doesn’t seem to live in the flashes that capture the guests at fashion weeks. With a gaze that navigates between fiction and reality, the Valencian photographer is capable of transporting us to the most intimate moments of the most visible events, such as Fashion Week in Paris, the Latin Grammys in Sevilla, or the Cannes Film Festival. In collaboration with I+D Magazine, he has presented some unique backstage shots. He brings us back to a type of photography that borders on a game where irony and ethics are perceptible in each angle and snapshot he provides. He confronts us with a very social, but, I believe, also very critical photography, where the light, the colors, and the lipstick on the teeth prompt us to reflect on who our references are, on fame, and on beauty. He generates an intimacy with the events and people he photographs, creating a photographic discourse where the tone is very close to the photographed. The important thing is sometimes found behind the backs of those who shout at the guest of the moment, demanding her best profile. It's where the grotesque and imperfect become worthy of being photographed. This approach reveals guards at Paris Fashion Week playing the heroes of the masses, politicians invited to the Latin Grammys smiling fearlessly with lipstick on their teeth, and two Betty Boops lost on the back of one of the guests at the Cannes Film Festival.

His work is projected in various directions, leaving us with projects such as the one he did with Teenage Dream, where he has created worlds reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. In these, Juan Carlos Bernal's designs have not only a space but a place to live. And of course, there are projects that seek an impact and debate, such as "Normal," where he attempts to demystify the word with a display of the body's imperfections and its real and normal aspect. Francesc Planes thus rises as one of the voices of new photography, where the ethical discourse and beauty cannot escape his flash.
