It Girl Wave

The internet is fast—we all know it—and with it, the trends change rapidly, inevitably influencing our personalities. The concept of the 'It girl' has always existed, but with the advent of TikTok and the new 'cores,' it is evolving, creating such specific subcategories that the concept of the 'It girl' is transitioning from elite to inclusive.

The It girl is always a hot girl, but she's also a break from a certain mass, eventually fitting in a new kind of mass. She can be anything she wants: a presenter, a model, a DJ, but most of all, a muse. However, her deep sensitivity should not be underestimated, often leading her to question many, perhaps too many, things. The truth is that It girls are more than the sum of their parts, more than their jobs, and more than what they show on social media. Speaking of social media, it may seem absurd, but Spotify has become the mass destruction weapon of the aforementioned girls who, depending on their whims and seasonal trends, identify with one genre or another. Tate McRae has already become the idol of the It-Girls; her song 'Greedy' has been among the most streamed worldwide on Spotify for weeks.

Born in 2003, her adolescence was spent collecting gold medals in various dance competitions across the United States and publishing unpublished works from her teenage pen on YouTube. This is how she captured the attention of RCA talent scouts who, shortly after, brought her into the spotlight. Tate is a woman decidedly sure of herself, not dependent on men to assert her power and charisma, although she moves in a decidedly patriarchal world. As Tate says, 'I had no idea how to dance and sing at the same time because they were just opposite sides of my brain—one was this emotional teenager who needed to express herself, and then the other side was this super-competitive athletic dancer. So it was really cool for me to be able to put my two passions together.' So, like any self-respecting It girl, Tate talks about herself and what surrounds her with power and strength, the same qualities that mask the innocence of a woman who gives 100% of herself, rarely taking moments to rediscover her fragility. Because there is a dark side that few give importance to: being a woman with clear ideas often actually involves moments of confusion, moments of weakness where you no longer know which direction to take. Moments when you no longer believe you can afford changes, moments when you would like to change but feel constrained in a certain reality, a sort of point of no return. But the great skill of the It girls lies precisely in masking all this, acting as a sword for others and a shield for themselves. Tate's new album is a countercurrent album, although it seems like the usual pop album. It is the result of hard work of introspection and research. Being sixteen and catapulted into a new world could be a catastrophe: you risk being devoured without even knowing how it happened. And yet, Tate emerged, always kept control of the ship, and had the time to always remember who she is and what she wants from life.
