Decades and Style Icons

Whimsigoth takes its cues from a variety of sources, from Art Nouveau prints to the blooming subcultures of the mid-to-late century. Look to the medieval revival of the 1960s, and the flowing naturalist fashion of the ‘70s. The ‘90s and early ‘00s saw general trends of darker makeup and fashion thanks to the Witch Media Boom, and much of the style is born out of movies like The Craft.

Find inspiration from characters like Phoebe Buffay from "Friends", the Owens sisters from "Practical Magic"; musicians like Stevie Nicks; and for modern-day inspiration, follow both Stephanie, aka ffigs, and Sophie Seddon on Instagram.

Textures and Tones

Whimsigoth thrives on contrasting textures. Velvet is a staple fabric, eliciting richness, but this style has room to play. Add corduroy or feathery accents to your ensemble. Suede and leather are popular choices for both outerwear and footwear. The goal is to create interest through various eclectic pieces.

Now that you know which textures to reach for, look for them in jewel tones like ruby, emerald, and amethyst. Unique earth tones, such as burnt yellows and sienna, paired with deep denims create an “everyday” look. Of course, white and black are there to support the style but do not have to be the focal point of the outfit.

Motifs and Drapes

Lace detailing, paisley or florals, and celestial imagery are fundamental. Be strategic when using such details. Lace evokes a gentle femininity reminiscent of Victorian gothic styles, and paisley and florals add to the naturalistic vibe. Celestial motifs are your statement pieces. Starry coats or chain belts with solar details will give you that divine look.

There is no one silhouette for this style, but aim for pieces that layer well. Flowing blouses beneath corsets give a romantic aura, and brocade vests with turtlenecks create depth without feeling bulky. Maxi skirts are common, but not a must. Consider pairing sheer tights with a pleated mini skirt, or grab denim bell bottoms for a more masculine approach. In these colder months, reach for a cropped cardigan or chunky knit over a camisole slip.
