The Club Kid Movement
The Club Kid subculture, which emerged in the second half of the 20th century, is underpinned by hedonistic tendencies, exaggerated fashion, makeup, and non-conformity against conservative norms. It redefined the nightlife of New York City and influenced drag art through names such as James St James, Michael Alig, and Amanda Lepore.

An underground, uninhibited party culture that singlehandedly altered fashion and the art of drag by pushing the extent to which queer performance and aesthetics stretched. The wild New York nightlife scene got wilder and saw one-of-a-kind fashion statements thanks to the iconic club kids of the time. The dazzling and blingy lights of the night proved the importance of creative self-expression since club kids started appearing on daytime TV shows as acknowledged individuals.
This subculture sadly brought about its rather dark story to tell. A name whose efforts helped lay the foundation for club kids, Michael Alig, fell victim to drug abuse and passed away at only 54. Alig's later life became a subject of public intrigue and controversy due to the murder of another Club Kid, Andre Melendez, overshadowing their earlier contributions to the club scene. The media focus was also on the name at the time, which failed to notice the totality of the club kid movement and its stratified, flamboyant, and expressive characteristics.
