Spooky Szn

Spooky szn is upon us for the 2000th (ish) time. In history, November 1st was celebrated as Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival, which relates to some of Halloween's origins. On this day, people would light bonfires to scare away ghosts, wear costumes so as to not be recognised by villainous spirits, among other traditions. Over time, certain traditions have been commercialised (surprise), including carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and themes of evil and all things spooky.

Historically, people likely wouldn't be trick-or-treating to see who could get the most candy, but rather to disguise themselves from negative energy and spirits, a process called ‘guising’. Similarly with pumpkins, which weren’t carved for a cute Insta pic, but instead to scare off spirits with unpleasant faces. They also used turnips originally; before learning that pumpkins are much easier to carve and can turn out bigger and better than a turnip. Who knew!

In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total sl*t, in the words of Cady Heron herself. Halloween is a great way to get everyone together and have some fun - in a scary costume or not - without forgetting the true history of it.

Love On Tour 2021 was a sparkling and sequined affair that made Harries feel... somewhere over the rainbow. An ultra-stylish celebration of Harry’s Fine Line album. Fashion. Collaboration. Singing (duh). Following the yellow brick road, Harry wore an outfit inspired by Dorothy in an extra special ‘Harryween’ show of his tour - October 30, Madison Square Garden, NYC. Like every other tour date, all of us were sitting on Twitter waiting to see the outfit of choice, typically a new colourway of his signature high-waisted pants and shirt combo. But, Harryween is an extra special occasion and is by far one of the most iconic celebrity Halloween dress-ups of recent years.

Harry Styles and Gucci are like a witch and a broom; hand in hand. By no surprise, Alessandro Michele (of Gucci) designed this not-so-spooky ensemble for Harry, including custom-made Gucci boots to replicate the iconic ruby slippers with a special Harry flair. Suited and booted as always. He is also slaying a gingham dress, bow, picnic basket, and Toto made an appearance!

Harryween night one made my ghoulish list for the most iconic celebrity Halloween fits for its vogue and gallantry. If anyone can continuously break down toxic masculinity and societal expectations, it’s Harry Styles. Men wearing dresses and makeup is unfortunately still something that isn’t 100% accepted, so the bravery to perform in front of millions of people as Dorothy is really inspiring. History making.

It's October 3rd.

You thought there was only gonna be one Mean Girls reference in this piece? Albeit not a celebrity Halloween appearance, the Mean Girls Halloween scene is one of the best of the movie, and brought iconic looks to our screens. So it counts. The fashion statements overall in the movie encapsulate the early 00s. Low waist. Layers. Colors. Army pants and flip flops.

These looks have a top spot in the list of best celebrity and TV Halloween costumes for their humour and momentous powers. It’s one of those scenes that people still talk about today, even if they haven’t seen the movie. It's a moment that people can bond over, nearly everyone will get a Mean Girls reference... and if they don't, that's awkward. The late 90s/early 00s was a wicked time for cinematic prodigies; Clueless, Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, The Notebook... and so on. Legendary movies can bring legendary garms, such as the Mean Girls Halloween party fit.

Well, Karen is a mouse, duh. In the movie she’s wearing a short black mini dress, with a bow ribbon and mouse ears. Gretchen is a cat; in a full body, black latex outfit. Regina is a bunny - wearing pink bunny ears, a sparkly white bodysuit with block shorts, tights, and white boots. Cady is a ghost bride, with a white ball gown, long black hair, a veil, and fake teeth (because nobody told her about the sl*t rule). The looks are a perfect mix between the true history of Halloween that will never be forgotten, with the modern-day societal shifts, where Halloween is basically an excuse for a party.

OMG is that a chicken?

If there’s anyone who has an impressive collection of Halloween costumes, it’s the Kardashian/Jenner family, and tbh we couldn’t expect anything less. From Kris Jenner to Christina Aguilera, BarbieLand to fairyland, and even Dorothy in 1999 (coincidence), Kylie Jenner has a pretty extensive range of Halloween dress-ups in her closet. Of all the sisters, Kylie's Halloween wardrobe could be the best.

In 2022, ‘Halloweekend’ was a major fashion event for Ky Ky, posting a plethora of grotesque looks to her Instagram - including photos and directory by Jora Frantzis. Our feeds were chilled with two space-themed costumes, an ultra-glam Bride of Frankenstein slay and more. Halloween is no joke for Kylie. Halloween lasts for a whole weekend for Kylie. Personally, her Bride of Frankenstein and alien costumes stand out as some of her best. If you wanna scroll all the way to 30th October 2022 on Kylie’s Insta to see the rest, you won’t regret it. Planet Kylie.

The ‘not of this Earth’ outfit strikes me more than some of Kylie’s other - yet just as legendary - looks for the incredibly detailed makeup and body art. Kylie is pictured in an all-blue foundation, with a sharp blue eye display, impressive contour, and iconic blue lipstick. She clearly puts in a chilling effort to Halloween, taking time for CGI and unearthly editing. The Kardashian/Jenners’ outfits are usually some of the scariest, first of all, and the biggest Halloween slays secondly. Let's be real, we aren't dumb - Kylie is queen of fashion; Halloween couture included. She would definitely win best-dressed at a Halloween party, which is literally like winning an Emmy as a kid.

How are you celebrating Halloween this year? Cosy night in with loved ones, pretending you're not on edge the whole way through the movie waiting for a jump scare (guilty)? Partying with friends in a sexy-but-still-scary outfit? Trying out Pamela Pumpkin’s workout at home? Whatever you're doing, you've got some seriously spooky celeb costumes to live up to. Maybe yours will be better, who knows.
