Shego

On September 24th, Shego, the Madrid-based all-female rock band, released their latest single, La Fiesta, and it's time to start celebrating. Even though summer is officially over, the trio keeps the party going with their punk-infused sound and more fun tracks promised to come.

Founded in Madrid during the COVID-19 pandemic, Maite, Raquel, and Charlotte have already become one of the most acclaimed rock bands in Spain’s alternative music scene. Inspired by their favorite artists like Lily Allen, The Cure, and Paramore, the trio has developed a sound influenced by punk, Spanish rock, indie, and lo-fi beats. Although their earlier singles, such as adiós and fumas?, explored softer harmonies, other hits like Oh Boi, which now goes over three million streams on Spotify, and Vicente Amor, showcase a bolder sound for the band.

Beyond their alternative music style, you might recognize the band’s name, Shego, from the beloved children’s cartoon Kim Possible. The group chose the name to honor one of the characters in the series, whom they felt represented them with her “I don’t give a fuck” attitude, chaotic energy, and strong personality. With this rebellious spirit, Maite, Raquel, and Charlotte are embarking on an adventurous musical journey, combining experimental rock-inspired harmonies with empowering lyrics in Spanish.

Their debut album, Suerte, Chica, was released in 2023, just a few years after the band was formed, and it quickly launched them into a tour across Spain. They brought rock and love to cities such as Barcelona, Zaragoza, and Huesca. This summer, they added even more gigs to their portfolio, performing at major Spanish festivals like Sonorama Ribera in Aranda de Duero, Love to Rock in Valencia, and 21 Distritos in Madrid, among others.

Although I haven’t had the chance to see the girls perform yet, they are said to epitomize both vulnerability and rage in their live shows, taking their audience on an emotional rollercoaster. In just a one-hour set, Shego makes you dance, scream, jump, and cry. "The intensity of the music makes you feel more like an artist," Maite, a member of Shego, told the Spanish digital platform efeminista, reaffirming the group’s powerful energy that shines through each of their live performances.

With the release of their latest single, La Fiesta, Shego is ushering in a new era in their musical adventure, giving fans a hint of what to expect from their second album. “La Fiesta is born from being fucked up, from being in the shit. Of not being able to get out of the loop. Of seeing ourselves, or seeing ours, in the mud. It talks about being willing to burst to the point of complete evasion,” the band says about their single. With this, Shego is setting the tone for their second major project, blending rock, pop, and punk for what promises to be their most exhilarating fiesta yet.
