On December 11th, I stepped into a time capsule disguised as Estragon Club, where The Lemon Twigs, the Long Island band, transported the crowd to the shimmering haze of the late 60s. With soaring harmonies, sharp guitar riffs, and theatrical flair celebrated by his royal highness, Sir Elton John, the D’Addario brothers and their band offered a masterclass in timeless sound strikingly original.

On Wednesday, December 11th, I was teletransported to a Winter Formal in another dimension, where a fantastic band was playing. Yes, you read it right. The band is called The Lemon Twigs. They are from Hicksville, Long Island, and their concert at Estragon, Bologna, was everything a 16-year-old girl from the late 60s could wish for. Well, I think. I wasn’t there in the 60s to confirm this, but neither was the band, so how can their music and craft sound so on point? The D’Addario brothers, Brian and Michael, are in their 20s and formed the band in 2014 as frontmen in their late teenage years. So, what’s their trick? With playful and sentimental vocal harmonies expertly woven among the four members, striking guitar riffs, and tunes that hadn’t been heard for at least 50 decades, the band brought to a close Astrale, a space exhibition of music across genres and nations, directed by Pasquale Pezzilo, Estragon’s Artistic Director.

Their music reflects a passion born at a young age, nurtured among the paper sleeves of The Beatles and Beach Boys’ Albums, and a powerful proof that DNA, like it or not, is not water. The brothers’ father navigated the 70s music scene as a musician, while their mother introduced them to theater and acting, leading to Broadway roles and film credits at a young age. Both passions are evident as the brothers hold the stage with charisma, especially through their (surely staged) brotherly bickering. Switching turns to sing each his own song and rotate instruments even with Bassist and Keyboardist, Danny Ayala, and Drummer, Reza Matin, the other two members with whom they share the stage, they all confidently rock 70s-inspired clothes and hairstyles.

The setlist, which spanned their entire discography, celebrated love, broken hearts, and youthful dreams. Their latest album, A Dream Is All We Know, marks their fifth project. Each album seems to have taken loose ends from the late 60s to give them their rightful place in the 21st century with honor. We’re not talking about an empty imitation. Even if the flows of inspiration are unmistakable, The Lemon Twigs are not a reenactment of anyone or anything. They are a missing brick of the music bridge between the jolly 60s and the rocker 70s—a time when many struggled to find their path through the evolution.

The Lemon Twigs fill a blank space with each album, all recorded on tape. They do so just by being themselves, unconcerned if they sound like a newfound episode of The Ed Sullivan Show and the perfect soundtrack to a sitcom.

Sara Buganza

One day, headbanging in a metal mosh pit, another day going to the Opera while screaming to ABBA in the car on the way there. That’s why any “So what kind of music do you usually listen to?” question sends her into a panic attack. Raised in a classic rock temple near Modena, played guitar ironically in a few bands and got a DAMS Degree to justify her love for the arts. She is Sara and Raandoom-ly here because, after a career in Music Public Relations, she found out that she loves expressing with academically high words what music makes her feel, and which songs and live concerts make her mind go in a downward spiral.
