Winter Fashion Month is one of the most exciting times of the year. While the holidays are pleasant in their packaging, nothing comes close to seeing fresh designs for the next season on a catwalk. Gretchen Heist is a New York-based fashion brand specializing in made-to-measure couture, outerwear, and leather goods. The brand's ethos and message consist of wanting to unite various individuals through fashion and the arts overall. An organic message that only adds to the allure of the brand.

The story behind the fashion house is art itself. Gretchen Weed, the creative director, grew up in her mother's art studio, and due to these experiences, her clothing collection is highly influenced by this time in her life. To add a special touch, 'Heist' is an anagram of her mother's maiden name. Creating this type of puzzle only draws audiences further in and to the discovery of uniquely designed clothing that is eye-catching and contains movement.

What permits Gretchen Heist to be such a refreshing luxury fashion brand in the current market is the experience of wearing and living within the brand. The design practice is an exploration process. Each design is made to order and incorporates a variety of themes. Included but not limited to psychology, symbology, and Trompe l’oeil details. The nuances within the stitches permit a sense of originality, a dying concept within the industry.

During the inaugural runway show for the fashion house, 'Stolen Paradise,' the viewers were told that the collection is inspired by the complex stages of grief that are part of the human experience in the context of the end of a romantic relationship. Each design is connected to that experience, from Lust, Love, Denial, Anger, Forlorn, Negotiation, Acceptance, and lastly, Forgiveness. With this knowledge in mind, the designer intended the clothes to provoke emotions within all of us as fabulous fashion should.

The collection has polished beach stones as the primary texture woven through the designs, embodying the heart's hardening after experiencing such a loss. The rocks also play a role in facilitating the idea behind 'nontraditional' sequins into the embellished material.

From a viewer's perspective, the show was most certainly a success. Seeing bold colors amid gray winter was uplifting and led to much anticipation for the changing seasons. The clothes created with the utmost attention were dazzling on the runway. The music paired with the collection symbolized each moment the creative director envisioned and allowed the audience to become entranced by the models.

Each look offered a new perspective on the assigned emotion, and seeing the clothing from multiple angles highlighted the movement and architecture throughout. Gretchen Heist has shown she knows what she is doing when creating her couture line. It will be exciting to see what the brand does next and if she will be a contender at Fall Fashion Week in the coming months.
