Milan's Vintage Gems

A little over five years ago, I relocated to Milan to pursue my studies in fashion. Since then, I've undergone a notable transformation in my fashion expression and shopping habits. I've shifted away from fast fashion and developed a deep love for discovering high-quality vintage pieces, leading me to explore numerous markets and stores.

Here are my favorite shops to consider for future visits to Milan.

  • First on my list, and a personal favorite, is Sous Vintage, situated in the charming neighborhood of Navigli. Run by Luca and Andrea, who are the sweetest and most helpful, this store offers a diverse selection of unique pieces spanning from the 1920s to the 2000s, featuring renowned designers such as Prada, Issey Miyake, and Gaultier. From the ambiance to the meticulously curated garments, Sous Vintage exudes an irresistible allure. The prices are reasonable, and the quality is exceptional—I've made numerous purchases here and continue to be impressed. It's undoubtedly a gem not to be overlooked.

  • Another standout vintage destination in the city is Bivio, located in both Porta Venezia and Porta Ticinese. Beyond offering a wide range of designer and high-quality vintage items, Bivio provides the opportunity to sell pieces you no longer use. With reasonable prices and items ranging from elegant evening gowns to pristine shoes and bags, it's a treasure trove for fashion lovers. Personally, I found one of my favorite pairs of shoes, '90s Prada strappy sandals (barely used, complete with box and dust bag), at an unbeatable price. Moreover, Bivio frequently updates its selection, ensuring a constant influx of exciting finds.

  • For accessories, there's this little store located in Arco della Pace called My Vintage Attire. The owner, Sophia, is super helpful and very nice. Here, you can find brands like Gucci, Margiela, and so much Chanel - yes, I also bought a pair of shoes here which I'm obsessed with. The pricing is very fair, and the curation is amazing.

  • For a truly immersive experience, albeit on the higher end, there's Shop the Story, founded by Alessia Algani—a contemporary vintage store located in Carrobio. Here, you'll discover iconic designers like Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, and Dries Van Noten. What sets this store apart is its impeccable curation, with pieces in pristine condition accompanied by runway photos. Even if you're not shopping, the experience alone is enriching for any fashion enthusiast with an interest in archive fashion, igniting creative inspiration with each visit.

  • No discussion of Milanese vintage would be complete without mentioning Cavalli e Nastri, founded by Claudia Jesi. This iconic establishment seamlessly merges fashion, art, and culture, boasting an eclectic collection of couture, ready-to-wear, and antique garments. From the glamorous yet nostalgic window displays to the beautifully chaotic interior, Cavalli e Nastri offers an unforgettable experience. With three locations—one in Brera and two in Porta Ticinese—it's a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Milan's vintage scene.

I've always had an affinity for vintage clothing, and living in a city like Milan has deepened my appreciation for it. While I enjoy the thrill of flea markets and the hunt for hidden treasures, I equally love the curated experience offered by these select stores. Delving into vintage fashion is about embracing its rich history, a sentiment that I find truly inspiring. Whether you're already obsessed with vintage or new to the scene, I hope this guide proves helpful in navigating Milan's vibrant vintage landscape.
