Meet Dan-Cristian Gocan
Meet Dan-Cristian Gocan, a photographer and designer who moves between high fashion and raw intensity, constructing visuals that challenge perception and push beyond traditional ideals of beauty. His work is defined by contrasts, precision and excess, control and chaos, shaped by his early years in post-communist Romania and his time in Milan and Berlin, where aesthetic discipline collides with unfiltered expression.

Based in cinematic influences and a fascination with power dynamics, Gocan builds imagery that carries both tension and seduction, portraying characters who command the frame with an arresting presence and capturing a world where beauty is neither submissive nor polished but charged with depth and defiance.

Your formative years in post-communist Romania undoubtedly shaped your aesthetic. How do these origins merge with high fashion in your current body of work, and what stories are you drawn to explore through this blend?
I have a twisted vision of glamour and fashion. Growing up in a freshly post-communist Romania, I witnessed an explosion of maximalism that stood in stark contrast to the minimalism of the 90s. My first muse was my mother – stiletto heels, big shoulder pads, power dressing, with the intoxicating mix of lipstick, hairspray, and heavy perfume.
The stories I love to tell unfold in a Lynchian blend of striking glamour and muted industrial backdrops, where beauty coexists with raw, haunting intensity.
As a nomadic artist moving through cultural epicenters like Milan and Berlin, how have these transitions influenced your photographic and design ethos? Can you discuss how specific elements from these cities are integrated into your creations?
I moved to Milan at 20, fulfilling my teenage dream of being surrounded by classic beauty and experiencing firsthand fashion access. However, I soon realized that perfection alone felt shallow. This led me to Berlin, where at the beginning, the city’s rawness and vibrant energy felt both exotic and inspiring. Immersing myself in its apparent freedom deeply influenced my work. Ultimately, after seven long years in Berlin, my eternal love for beauty and glamour brought me back to Milan.
Connecting back to the first question, my ethos now blends Milan’s structured version of beauty with Berlin’s unfiltered spirit, creating a dialogue between beauty and rebellion.

Strength and sensuality frequently emerge as powerful themes in your work. Could you share how you balance these elements to create visual narratives that engage and challenge the viewer?
My aesthetic is a blend of luxury, seduction, and power. It evokes a polished yet provocative world of beauty at a raw intensity. Being influenced by the bold glamour of the 80s and 90s, my narratives are cinematic and dark, with moody contrasts and commanding, slightly forced posing, but nonetheless arresting and unforgettable. I portray characters with magnetic beauty, confident, in control, and embodying a version of beauty that is neither submissive nor innocent, but alluring, empowering, and unapologetically strong.

The vibrant atmospheres of nightlife and high fashion scenes are central in your visuals. What drives you to capture these energies, and how do you ensure they authentically reflect in your projects?
I am drawn to the raw energy of the nightlife because it is untamed, while high fashion represents control and refinement. This duality in my work is a way of capturing two sides of the human experience: the freedom of the night, with the composed beauty of high fashion.

How do you navigate the contrast between the rawness of nightlife and the structured world of high fashion in your art, and what does this dynamic say about your creative philosophy?
I thrive in the contrast between rawness and structure; it’s where my creativity lives. This dynamic mirrors my philosophy of blending beauty with imperfection, creating tension and depth in my work.

Are there particular artists or movements that have influenced your creative approach or whose impact you see in your own stylistic evolution?
My stylistic influences come from a range of artists, including the imagery of David Lynch, the raw sensuality of Robert Mapplethorpe, and Madonna’s ‘Justify My Love’ era. I am also influenced by the fashion movements of the 80s, 90s, and 00s, Yves Saint Laurent with his blend of excess and emotion, Tom Ford for his sleek hedonism, Rick Owens for his dark, visceral romanticism, and John Galliano for his gothic and poetic reality.
Looking forward, what new artistic challenges are you eager to take on? Are there specific aspirations or projects that you anticipate will shape the next phase of your artistic journey?
My focus is rooted in the present, channeling my energy into creating work that authentically represents my vision. I aim to craft meaningful stories through my visual language, stories that provoke a thought, an emotion. While I’m not a fan of talking about what’s next, I welcome opportunities that challenge my creativity and allow me to collaborate with brands or projects that value bold, evocative narratives.
