Kate's Comeback Year

The 90s supermodel sensation has been slowly reentering the fashion industry over the past few years, but is 2025 her year for an official comeback with the re-emergence of minimalism and grunge?

After appearing at multiple spring/summer 2025 shows during fashion week in late 2024 and early 2025, speculation arose about whether the ‘90s supermodel would be making an official comeback to the fashion world and not just her occasional appearances. She ended 2024 on a high after releasing her collection collaborating with Zara, but 2025 is looking to be her year. She began 2025 by dominating the red carpet and front row at the Dior Men’s fall 2025 show in Paris, her surprise appearance turning heads as she wore an asymmetrical, simple silk dress and bold metallic accessories, clearly making references and taking inspiration from her industry-changing - and challenging - looks from the 90’s, embracing minimalism with a touch of grunge. This look stunned photographers and viewers, being the perfect look to make her comeback, incorporating her edgy, grunge staple look from the 90s with the timeless elegance of a silk dress, her references to the nostalgia of her minimalist, edgy style that changed the trajectory of fashion reemerging in the fashion world of today and amongst many designers recent collections - could this be why she is making so many appearances so far in 2025?

This was not the only time she embodied the elegance of the silk dress, appearing front row at the Calvin Klein FW/25 ready-to-wear show at New York Fashion Week at the beginning of February. She modelled a maxi silk dress paired with a floor-length blazer paired with a suede bucket bag, again channeling her iconic and effortless '90s grunge with the chic of a silk dress, reminding us that she has not forgotten her iconic ‘90s style that we all know and love.

It wasn’t just fashion weeks where Moss shocked us, she has also announced being the face of campaigns and brands this year, being the face of both Isabel Marant and Donna Karan’s collections this year. The ‘90s icon’s entry back into editorials this year by being at the forefront of two designers’ collections is incredibly exciting for the fashion industry and fellow fashion obsessors, especially following her runway debut for Victoria's Secret back in October. Isabel Marant’s collection with Moss definitely takes inspiration from her ‘90s style as well as some nods to 2000’s Y2K style that Moss also has a part to play in its revolution. These references within Marant’s collection could be why Moss is at the forefront of the fashion line just as she was at the forefront of fashion in the’90s.

Kate Moss is the embodiment of the fashion industry, being one of the most iconic and noticeable supermodels not just of the ‘90s but of all time, being recognized globally for her natural grunge and chic look. The excitement within the industry after her multiple appearances and campaigns within fashion in the space of just under 3 months in the new year is vast, as we all are hoping to see the icon back on the runway or in more editorials, particularly since the ‘90s grunge trends are re-entering the fashion industry. Moss’s comeback at a time where ‘90s and 2000s nostalgia within fashion are high would be perfect, her minimalist and edgy style that redefined fashion in the ‘90s slowly coming back into trend, with brands such as Acne Studios, DSQUARED2 and - of course - Isabel Marant embracing Y2K and grunge in their latest collections within this recent fashion week and season. Kate Moss’s reemergence within the fashion world this year could not have come at a better time, the icon who embodied and, arguably, created the ‘90s grunge style that Gen-Z today are so reminiscent over; Moss’s revolution within fashion in a decade of such change and cultural shifts within fashion being widely impactful and has helped shape fashion since, allowing us to see how less is more, minimalism is maximalism.

With the fashion industry of today taking inspiration from Y2K and grunge, hopefully, we will see more from the icon that built this trend and challenged fashion norms and standards in the ‘90s, this year being Moss’s year to embody herdistinctive, effortless style that we are all nostalgic and reminiscent over and want to see more of from designers in their coming collections - the power of minimalism.
