Dress Code 2024

How will we dress in 2024? What are the colors and trends that will shape our fashion choices? Will we continue to love quiet luxury, no pants, bloke-core, and tights?

According to experts and the SS24 runways, yes, but not only that; we will explore new variations of these aesthetics and discover new styles. We will blend grunge and coquette-core, the '90s and the '60s, minimalism and athleisure, indie sleaze and basic silhouettes. The key this year will be not to embrace a single aesthetic but to mix different ones to create something personal that reflects who we are and what we love, rather than simply aligning with another TikTok trend. We mentioned that quiet luxury will accompany us in the coming years, but according to experts, 2024 will also be the year of its more utilitarian evolution: quiet outdoor. Streets will be filled with hiking shoes, technical fabrics, padded and high-performance jackets.

If 2023 saw collaborations like The North Face and Gucci or Arc'teryx and Jil Sander, and celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner cemented the success of gorpcore by combining trend elements with luxury brands, predictions suggest we'll do the same, but favoring soft nuances and slimmer silhouettes. Practicality and functionality will meet minimalism in design while maintaining the technical aspects of traditional outdoor clothing, making our outfits suitable for both urban environments and outdoor adventures without compromising elegance.

We've already talked about bloke-core, and the trend will continue to influence how we dress in 2024, embracing various sports: not just football but also tennis, skiing, and Formula 1. Influenced by looks seen on celebrities like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley at F1 or Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber at the US Open, the trend will evolve, shifting focus from simple football merchandise to true wardrobe contamination: boxing shorts, tennis skirts, race jackets, ski jackets, Oakley visors, and so on. All items to be mixed with basic or ultra-feminine pieces, based on your personality.

However, the new trend to keep an eye on is Grandpa-core. The clothing of men over seventy will influence our looks. The Loewe SS24 show, for example, has already provided useful hints for embracing the new trend: high-waisted pants, maxi cardigans, old-style sweaters, corduroy pieces, knitted vests, oversized blazers. The result is an eclectic and nostalgic look that mixes vintage and contemporary pieces, already labeled by TikTok users as the aesthetic of the year—even though the year has just begun.

But despite new trends, us nostalgics are not ready to abandon the coquette style, ballet-core, bows, ruffles, airy skirts, and girly outfits. This was evident in the looks of celebrities at the recent Golden Globes red carpet. Celebrity choices, from Margot Robbie to Carey Mulligan, were characterized by glamour and romance, featuring sequins, pink, red, and lace, making us dream again of Hollywood allure.

Margot Robbie paid homage once again to her Barbie character, picturing 1977’s Barbie Superstar. The star graced the red carpet with a sparkling pink mermaid gown, custom-made by Giorgio Armani Privé, accessorized with a matching tulle stole. Following Margot's example, many other stars also opted for various shades of pink. Gold, silver, bronze, and metallic finishes were confirmed as a fashion trend not only on runways but also at the Golden Globes. Elizabeth Debicki received the Supporting Actress award for her role as Diana in The Crown, wearing a metallic FW23 Dior Couture gown, and Emma Stone won the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical award for her role in Poor Creatures, wearing a champagne-colored Louis Vuitton dress. But the new year is all about not labeling: the blurred boundaries of menswear and womenswear will collide, merging with genderless fashion, allowing everyone to express themselves freely. Floral patterns will become more conceptual and structured, with a more concrete twist. Inspirations from the runways include Sandy Liang, Simone Rocha, and Marco Rambaldi.

In 2024, the love for the color red, from the brightest shade to Black Cherry Red, will continue to add a touch of color to our outfits. Just look at the SS24 collections: foremost Gucci with its "Gucci Red" that painted clothes, accessories, and shoes. As on the runway, so on the red carpet: at the Golden Globes, Selena Gomez drew everyone's attention with a custom-made Armani Privé mini dress, featuring a flared skirt and a crossover top. In red, but Valentino Haute Couture, also Florence Pugh, who wore a dress with a sweetheart neckline, hints of transparency, and three-dimensional floral appliqués. Oversized bags, tights, and mary janes: all about red statement pieces. So this year, go for pleated skirts, thin belts, collars, cardigans, button-down shirts, polo shirts, and pullovers, but mix them with ruffles, tulle skirts, miniskirts, beach shorts, punk accessories, and vibrant patterns. 2024 will be a year without rules, a year of mix & match, a year of experiments that everyone, from industry professionals to fashion enthusiasts, can't wait to embrace to showcase their looks.
