Meet Chiron Duong, reshaping the landscape of Vietnamese photography. His work is a unique fusion of traditional Asian culture and modern artistry. Duong takes photography beyond simple image capture, weaving stories rich in emotional depth and cultural significance. With his lens, he explores and reinterprets Vietnamese heritage, adding a contemporary twist. His artistic journey highlights the evolving narrative of Vietnamese culture in visual art.

In your lens, how is reality transformed into something extraordinary?

C.D : Thank you for this question. I believe that everything has a hidden life, one that I sometimes can't fathom. Photography, for me, is a gateway to uncovering the subtle nuances of the world – from people to flowers, and various objects. There's a part of my identity that I can't fully articulate, but through my photographs, I express my unique perspective, making each image special.

How do the rich textures of your Vietnamese heritage weave into your artistic expression?

C.D : Integrating my heritage into my work feels natural, as it's a part of who I am. Everyone's cultural background informs their artistic voice, leading to a diversity of expressions. Growing up in a time before the internet's ubiquity, I've experienced a blend of traditional nostalgia and modern society. This duality influences my projects, as I draw from my memories and personal inquiries.

Can you capture the core emotion that fuels your creativity?

C.D : Absolutely. The essence lies in self-observation and belief. My diverse life experiences, including challenging ones, have shaped me. I constantly reflect on my affinity for certain communities, art genres, and artists. This introspection helps me understand my empathy, especially towards the underprivileged, who have been my support in various life stages.

How does your work echo the pulse of contemporary art movements?

C.D : I don't consciously align my work with contemporary art movements. My approach stems from my background in landscape architecture, which influences my photographic projects. This often leads to exploring societal, ecological, and community issues through my art.

Could you describe the interplay of light in sculpting the narratives of your photographs?

C.D : Light, in all its forms, is valuable to me. However, I have a special connection with sunset and yellow lights, reminiscent of my childhood in the countryside. These memories often inspire me to recreate similar lighting in my work.

What untold stories do colors narrate in your images?

C.D : Color is a form of relaxation and exploration for me, thanks to my background in painting. I don't stress over color usage; it evolves with my age and is influenced by my environment. This allows me to explore and represent different landscapes through my color palette.

What has been a defining moment in shaping your artistic identity?

C.D : There was a time when I explored various genres in photography, which led to a loss of energy in certain aspects of fashion photography. Questioning myself helped realign my focus, leading to a surge in creative and emotional energy, despite high work pressure. Finding what truly resonates with me was key.

How do you blend traditional influences with a modern artistic vision?

C.D : My childhood, steeped in folk values amidst life's challenges, left an indelible mark on me. The advent of the internet during my teenage years brought modern technology into this traditional setting. My art is an expression of these intertwined experiences, reflecting my most sincere emotions.

What emerging mediums or themes are you currently exploring?

C.D : I have exciting projects lined up this year, still focusing on the intersection of tradition and modernity, expressed through movement and color. It's another phase for me to explore new color schemes and express myself freely.
