ceneri
Irene Ciol, known as ceneri, is a singer-songwriter from Friuli, Italy, born in 2000. She grew up in a small village of 8.000 people surrounded by fields, breathing in both art and fresh air. In 2016, thanks to a songwriting course, she discovered music, an art form that allowed her to find a way to tell her story, express herself, and understand her emotions. From that moment on, music never left her.
After the success of her first two EPs, which showcased her talent and amassed millions of streams, ceneri returned with a new project that is emotionally deeper and musically more refined. In “Forma Liquida”, ceneri pours out her youth - thoughts, memories, and reflections mix in the lyrics to narrate the phases that accompany the transition into adulthood: the desire for freedom, the need to escape a stifling small-town life, learning how to face and overcome heartbreak, and that growing sense of responsibility that comes naturally with maturity. We had the opportunity to discover more about the artist and to take a deep dive into her emotions.
ceneri and Irene – you can feel through Forma Liquida that there’s a lot of the little Irene (who grew up in a small town where it was possible to reconnect with her deepest self and give voice and space to her passions) in today's Irene. The need to make music to express her inner self in a way that wasn’t possible otherwise is deeply interlinked with the artist.
“I don’t think one exists without the other (en. little Irene and Irene today), I feel indivisible from both. I see a lot of the child version of me in the girl and woman I am now, and that makes me really happy because little Irene (genuine, curious, creative) is everything I want to become. I started making music because I couldn’t find any other way to express what I was holding inside, it freed me. I think the balance comes as you grow, when you understand where you’re going wrong - pain teaches you more than anything, and for that reason, we have to remember to be kind to ourselves”.
Her music, and this album in general, is a constant build-up of emotions. From the desire for freedom and the need to escape a stifling small-town life to learning how to face and overcome the disappointments of love – it’s really important for ceneri to keep the introspective aspect alive in her music.
“It's essential because it's part of my nature. I'm a hypersensitive and emotional person, and I experience even small things very intensely. Music helps me to properly understand my feelings and process them”.
ceneri is an intriguing character, with a direct yet "pure" and delicate approach to communication. It’s always great to find artists who manage their communication in such a sweet and real way – it feels fresh, doesn’t weigh on those following you, but still manages to get a message across. There seems to be a sort of duality in your personality that’s rooted in the sweetest, most genuine part of you and we were wondering: how would you describe yourself to others? What do you see in the mirror?
“I really struggle to open up to others, and weirdly enough, it's easier for me to communicate through my songs. Sometimes I wish I could be more direct, more bold because I feel like people don’t always take me seriously because of my soft and whispered way of speaking, but it’s something I definitely don’t want to change. I’m a very determined person, but also really insecure”.
For ceneri, the future is filled with endless possibilities and her art is what drives her every day, the reason she gets out of bed each morning with purpose and excitement.
“This is my dream for my near future - music. It's something that makes me happy and fills my heart, and I’m incredibly grateful for this career. I want to keep doing it for the rest of my life”.
