Predictions for Fashion

Maybe a controversial fashion pick, but I see the statement necklace making its return in 2025, but maybe in a different form. While I think the large plastic mosaics covering the collarbone may stay a thing of the past, long chains with large distinctive charms, and lace or beaded chokers in the Victorian style would be a perfect addition to the elegant basic and longer silhouettes we are already seeing in the current trends.

Meanwhile, Julia DiBona sees ruffles in our horizons this year, explaining, “I think ruffles will be huge this year, hopping on the girly micro trends we’ve seen already like ballet flats and bows.” She also predicts that some more of the 2010s trends will make a return, adding, “I think boho chic will be back like big belts, slouchy boots etc., and everything Isabel Marant.”

Predictions for Life + Style

One of the main life and style shifts of 2025 is going to be the shift away from influencer culture. With the rise of the ‘de-influencing’ space and the increased calls against consumerism that rang out in 2024, coupled with the movements such as the unfollow celebrities movement in May of 2024 and videos on de-influencing gaining tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of views, consumers are starting to see through the brand endorsements and microtrends that have been prominent in the first half of the 2020s. This goes hand in hand with perhaps us seeing a decline in the cultural capital of the Kardashians this year: between the failed attempt at hype that was Kim Kardashian's Santa Baby video, the lack of interest in Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet’s relationship, and the recent drama between extended family member Alabama Barker allegedly having an affair with Danielle Bregoli’s ex-boyfriend while she was in cancer treatment, the ‘opulent mess’ facade is starting to crack and the public at large are getting over this once all-powerful family.

Meanwhile, Anitamaria predicts that AI in the everyday will be in store in 2025, describing it as a “Major topic of discussion throughout 2024” that “is set to revolutionize daily life in 2025.”
“With continuously evolving algorithms and expanding applications, AI is expected to reshape lifestyles and routines in unprecedented ways. By the end of 2025, it is highly probable that innovative AI tools will have become deeply embedded in our habits, for better or worse.”

For better or for worse indeed.

Julia DiBona predicts that the cultural curiosity around sobriety is going to blossom in the coming year. “With the new label changes on alcohol [in the US], I think there will be an even bigger push into the sober curious movement. More alcohol-free events/shops to open, definitely in the US but probably not Europe yet.” There has been a decline in the amount and frequency of drinking, particularly within Gen Z, in 2024, so it will be interesting to see how the events space reacts to these changing preferences.

Predictions for Arts and Culture

As for arts and culture, Anitamaria sees more Gaga collaborations in our future:
“Following the chart-topping duet with Bruno Mars, speculation among Lady Gaga's fans is growing about a potential collaboration with The Weeknd. Both artists released debut singles from their upcoming albums last year, teasing their highly anticipated comebacks with similar messaging: 'The Weeknd Returns' and 'Gaga Returns.' Adding fuel to the rumors, The Weeknd has shared Instagram stories supporting Gaga, sparking curiosity about whether this is merely coincidental or a hint at a forthcoming collaboration.”

Julia DiBona has one woman on her mind in this regard: Taylor Swift. She tells me she reckons the now-record holder for the highest-grossing tour will be “engaged, but also announcing a brand new album along with Reputation TV then finally Debut TV. She can’t stop writing!!!”

As for myself, my delusional prediction will be that alt rock/emo quartet (and the only men I’ll ever love) My Chemical Romance will finally announce their 5th studio album. After reforming in 2019, a massive world tour, and a string of festival appearances, they have brought back the Black Parade for a full concept North American tour complete with new teaser scenes and characters explaining the dictatorship that the fictional band live under. Frank Iero even hit back at those saying that it was too much for a tour, saying we have ‘no clue’ what they have in store; I do, give me the album yesterday. I’ve been waiting 10 years for this.

Julia Brunton

Describing herself as Professionally online, Julia is a recent Media, Industry and Innovation graduate with a focus on digital culture and society. Her passion for research and digital culture is matched only by her love for alternative and metal music and fashion, with both pillars of interest forming the foundation for Julia’s written work. Hailing from England’s north east, she hopes she can champion the local scene and grassroots cultural efforts whenever she can; she hopes her writing can encourage others to pop down to their local venue and keep the culture alive.
